Taking the stress out of Christmas shopping

With the festive season sneaking up on us our shopping correspondent Helen White says that researching children's gift ideas on the internet at home can save you bags of time at the checkout

THE daunting task of Christmas shopping is about to descend on us. It may only be October, but when it comes to ordering anything online there is no such thing as searching too soon, as the last thing you’ll want to be doing is anxiously awaiting for your gifts to arrive before Christmas Day.

Mooching around the shops in town is a lot of fun, but some people may be surprised at the range of goodies they can find through the internet first, to help them get an idea of where to go and what to look for before traipsing around in the cold.

There are some great new toys for children of any age and gender which I found easily, and I have selected a few of the top ones on offer that are stocked in shops nearby.
Most of the following are available in Woolworths and the Early Learning Centre, both of which are located in Northbrook Street, Newbury, or in Argos at Newbury Retail Park.

I think my favourite children’s gift has to be the Rose Petal Cottage from the Cherry Blossom Stores range of World’s Apart, which opens like a little dream playhouse for youngsters aged three and over. And since its launch, additional accessory sets have been released, including the delightful tea set and laundry set, so you could actually add to this present on future birthdays and Christmases.

The cottage, which includes the cooker unit, costs £79.99, while the nursery set costs £34.99, the lounge set £19.99 and kitchen set £34.99.

The fun doesn’t stop there, however, as children can keep themselves busy all day with the many accessory sets and role play activities available.

In the same range you can buy a postal set complete with post box, post bag, postcards, a stamper and stamps; a grocery set with its own food stand, shopping bag and fruit and vegetables: and an ice cream set perfect for serving up delicious sundaes using the scoop.

A Swap Top Workbench is designed in bold red, yellow and silver, and just like the kitchen, it is an attractive and functional desk and chair that will look good in any child’s room. Opened out into its playtime mode, there are tools, a vice and drill, and a saw, hammer and spanner to complete the play experience.

Bedtime buddies that glow are an ideal gift for children who are nervous of the dark and these 15cm tall Lumilove Nightlights I found are available in a variety of cute characters which change colour constantly, from red and orange, to pink and green. There’s Bamboo the Panda, Cherry the Kitten, Lily the Elephant, Wabbit the Rabbit and Wouaf the Puppy. Each animal light is soft and malleable with moving legs so they can sit or stand at your child’s bedside.

The award-winning iCoaster from Mega Brands retails at £79.99 for ages six-plus and offers boys and girls an impressive and hi-tech multi-sensory joyride. It is fast and exciting and when the Sound FX Music Studio is turned on, children can create their own mix of tunes and effects.
Towers can be assembled and sensors placed along the track and the gadgety toy recently won the SMart Play category of the Science Museum’s SMart Toy Awards 2008.
