A GOLD Charity Shield Winners Medal awarded to Arsenal stalwart Archie MacCauley in 1948 is to go on auction in Midgham next week. MacCauley's family has put on sale the 15 carat gold medal was awarded to him for his role in Arsenal's 4-3 win over Manchester United in the first Charity Shield match after the Second World War, played at Highbury on October 6, 1948. MacCauley, who was an almost ever-present player for the Gunners between 1947 and 1950, making a total of 108 appearances for the club, as well as seven Scotland caps. The medal, which will go on sale at Cameo Auctioneers on June 9, is expected to fetch between £2500 and £3500. In 1957, he succeeded Tom Parker as Norwich City manager, leading the Third Division side to the FA Cup semi-finals in 1959, and promotion to the Second Division the following year. In 1961, MacCauley moved to West Bromwich Albion, finishing his mangerial career with Brighton & Hove Albion between 1963 and 1968. He died in June 1993, aged 77.
