A NUMBER of arrests have been made during protests at Aldermaston’s Atomic Weapons Establishment this morning (Monday). The spontaneous demonstrations began at 5.15am when a number of people attempted to block four of the gates to the West Berkshire facility. The protesters used locking devices to attach themselves to objects and other protesters and specialist Ministry of Defence (MoD) police removal teams were required to release them.A spokesman for the MoD police confirmed several people had been arrested on suspicion of obstructing the highway and were currently being interviewed at local police stations. He added that arrangements were made to ensure AWE employees were able to get into work and Thames Valley Police officers had all been at the scene helping to keep traffic disruption to a minimum. The activists said they hoped to cause road blockages that would prevent construction vehicles from getting into the site.Angie Zelter, one of the organisers of the blockade today, said: “When our Government refuses to comply with the fundamental principles of law and undermines the whole Non-Proliferation process then it is up to us, ordinary people, to prevent 'business as usual' at Aldermaston. The blockades today are responsible nonviolent attempts to prevent nuclear state terrorism.”
