POLICE officers and members of the public from across West Berkshire were commended at a special ceremony last Wednesday (June 10). The officers were presented with their awards by Chief Superintendent Richard Bennett during the event at Reading Police Station. PCSO Adrian Coggins and Pc Ian Bibbins, from the Greenham neighbourhood policing team, and member of the public Lesley Trott were given awards for the work they have put into providing a new youth centre, ‘The Diamond’, on Greenham’s Pigeon’s Farm estate. PCSO Coggins and Pc Bibbins, with their colleague PCSO Andrew Scott, who will receive a Chief Constable’s Commendation for his work on the project later in the year, raised £50,000 from local businesses, housing associations, the Greenham Common Trust and West Berkshire Council after identifying that anti-social behaviour on the estate was primarily due to a lack of youth facilities in the area. The money was used to construct a custom-made building in October last year. Burghfield residents Mark Honey and Clive Blackburn also received commendations, in their absence, for their actions in restraining a man, who had been brandishing a knife, until police arrived. Pc Tim Emery and PCSO Ian Pearse, from the Tilehurst West neighbourhood policing team, were recognised for their role in coming to the aid of an elderly gentleman who had collapsed in Pangbourne in March. They arrived before paramedics and began CPR and used a defibrillator to partially revive the man. Unfortunately the gentleman did not recover but the actions of the officers meant that his family was able to be with him when he died. Response officers Pc Nathan Adby and Pc Benjamin Train were also honoured for the way they dealt with an incident in Newbury when two members of the public were found unconscious. The officers put both people in the recovery position until paramedics arrived and then assisted them in ensuring their safety when the man and woman were brought round and assisted in preventing them from walking off in their confused states. They also helped the ambulance crew transport them to hospital. To see all the award winners click on the 'more pictures' link below.
