THE Duke of York, Prince Andrew, visited the Gist distribution centre in Thatcham on Friday.The visit was part of his role as the UK’s Special Representative for International Trade and Investment, and included a visit to seven depots.Gist, in Enterprise Way, is the regional distribution centre for Marks & Spencer.On his visit, Prince Andrew was joined by the chairman of M&S, Sir Stuart Rose.After meeting Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire, the Hon Mrs Mary Bayliss, local councillors, the town mayor Stephanie Steevenson and key members of M&S logistics team, Prince Andrew accompanied by Sir Stuart, toured the distribution centre which handles 550,000 delivery trays per week and discussed the logistics of M&S food distribution.The Duke of York was shown the process of handling goods from local suppliers and picking of food for delivery and at the end of the tour he met the team and signed a visitor’s book to commemorate his visit.Gist general manager Martin West said: “Food distribution is generally hidden behind the scenes, but it’s actually a complex operation which plays an important role in retail.“We were very proud to show His Royal Highness around the distribution centre and hope that he enjoyed his visit to Thatcham.”Gist employs 400 people and serves 87 Marks & Spencer stores in the area.
