BURGHCLERE School’s brass band has played its way through to the National Music for Youth competition this July.Lead by band master Bill Ferrier, the forty strong brass band comprising of members ranging from years three to six, overcame competitors and won the regional festivals.The small rural school of only 120 pupils encourages participation with the free loan of an instrument, along with an individual music lesson each week and additional band practice.The band is hoping for further success in the National competition on July 6.Band spokesman Mark Forson said: “Mr Ferrier turns the sound from the children into a truly harmonious chord. The children have learned enormously from Mr Ferrier’s knowledge and experience.”Organisers of the competition, Music for Youth are an educational charity, providing performance opportunities for young musicians nationwide.Mr Ferrier will be leaving at the end of the summer and the band is currently looking for a replacement.If you are interested in the position contact Alison Stanton, band secretary on (01635) 278523 or for more details contact Mark Forson on (01635) 253092.
