ALL ACTION American Wrestling is set to come to Newbury on Friday. As part of the professional wrestlers autumn tour, the Waterside Centre in Newbury will host an event that will pit wrestlers from the USA, Canada, Germany and Japan against the very best from Great Britain. The evening will feature New York’s Mean Bad News Brown, who has come to the country with an open challenge to any UK wrestlers who have the courage to take him on. That challenge has been accepted by London’s former heavyweight champion James Mason, who has been wrestling for almost 20 years and has recently appeared on World Wrestling Entertainment’s (WWE) Smackdown event, defeating one of its stars, Montel Vontavious Porteron (MVP). There will also be local talent on show, with Thatcham’s own Danny Driscoll (pictured), who is also known as Mr Entertainment in the wrestling world, set to take on the Oriental man of mystery, Tagori. Driscoll, aged 26, has been wrestling on and off for about nine years and was once trained by WWE legend, Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts. He said: “This will be the first show around this area and I am really excited about it. “It means a lot to me - I have got friends going and it will be a real buzz to go out and wrestle in front of them. “There is nothing like entertaining live and I think it will be very popular.” Other bouts that are set to take place over the two-and-a-half hour event include an international ladies clash with the 25 stone Klondyke Kate taking on the Kansas City Bomber, as well as tag team match-ups and the main event, an over the top rope Royal Rumble featuring 12 wrestlers, each of whom will bid to be the last man standing. James Atkins, who is better known as wrestler James Mason, said: “It is unusual to have this here in Newbury, but another venue had to cancel and this is a last minute event. “It is probably a one-off with the size of the venue, but it is worth a go and it should be a fantastic night.” The evening starts at 7.30pm and doors open at 7pm. Tickets, priced at £10 each, are on sale now from Newbury Tourist Information, or can be purchased on the door on the night. For more information, phone the box office on 01635 30267. |
