Thatcham crash to seventh straight defeat
Sat, November 14 2009

FOOTBALL: Town's woeful run continues while Hungerford crash to Bennett treble and Newbury hammer high-flyers

IT WAS unlucky seven for Thatcham Town as they crashed to their seventh straight defeat when going down 2-1 at home to AFC Totton in the Zamaretto League’s Division One South and West on Saturday.
The arrival of new striker Adam Wallace from Windsor and Eton failed to ignite Thatcham, although they were the first to strike when Dean Stow gave them a 12th minute when his cross caught in the wind and drifted over Totton goalkeeper Gareth Barfoot.
Barfoot was the busier of the two goalkeepers, but when Windsor broke, they got back on terms 10 minutes before the interval when Paul Strudley could only parry Brett Williams’ shot and Mike Gosney snapped up the rebound.
And Totton went ahead eight minutes later with their own touch of fortune, Gosney’s free kick taking a deflection off the wall to leave Strudley stranded.
The second half produced few chances although Totton should have had a third when Gosney teed up Nathan Jack to blaze the ball over from point-blank range.
Hungerford Town also came undone, going down 3-0 away to Gosport Borough with Justin Bennett netting all three goals.
He put Gosport two up inside 15 minutes and completed hs treble just after the interval.
Hungerford are due to make the trip to Thatcham on Tuesday night for a Berks and Bucks Senior Cup tie.
Newbury returned to winning form in the Hellenic League’s Division One East with a 5-0 thumping of second in the table South Kilburn on their own ground.
But Kintbury Rangers were on the receiving end in the same division, losing 5-2 away to Farnborough Reserves.
