DEMONSTRATORS protested against animal testing outside Bayer’s Newbury headquarters in Strawberry Hill yesterday (Wednesday). The protesters were from the Berkshire Animal Rights group and kept up a vigil from mid-morning until the afternoon, handing out leaflets denouncing Huntingdon Life Sciences, one of the world’s largest contract research organisations. One of the protesters, Rachel Foster from Oxford, said: “It is wrong to be testing on our fellow creatures. They have their own lives and there are boundaries you shouldn’t cross.” Bayer spokesman Steve Painter said that whether the company is a customer of Huntingdon Life Sciences or not is confidential. He added that Bayer continually tries to reduce the number of animals used in testing and replace animal testing with other methods. “The fact remains that animal research is required by law and is part of bringing pharmaceuticals onto the market,” he added. He said that the company did not engage in dialogue with protesters.
