THE NOROVIRUS has returned to the Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital - the third outbreak in two years, and the second this year - with visiting hours currently restricted. Hospital spokeswoman, Gina Hanafin today (Friday, November 13) confirmed eight patients were affected at the hospital, within one isolated medical ward, which closed on Tuesday (November 10).“To keep this to a minimum we are strongly advising the local population not to visit the hospital if they are experiencing any symptoms of diarrhoea or vomiting and that they are completely clear of these for at least 48 hours before visiting hospitals,” said Mrs Hanafin. Visitors and patients, she continued, alongside staff, were asked to be vigilant with hand washing.“Using soap and water is the gold standard in terms of effectiveness against norovirus,” she added. The outbreak is the second this year at the hospital and the third outbreak in two years. In January, 20 patients were isolated following an outbreak, and in February 2008, 38 patients were affected. Norovirus is the most common cause of infectious gastroenteritis in England and although relatively mild, norovirus illness can occur at any age because immunity to it is not long-lasting.Visiting hours at the hospital have been restricted to 2pm to 3pm and 6pm to 7pm.
