A DERELICT barn was destroyed by a suspicious fire in Speen late last night.Firefighters from Newbury’s Green Watch, along with crews from Hungerford and Pangbourne and a mobile command vehicle from Reading, were called to the scene at Donnington Grove Golf Club, Grove Road, just after 11pm.They spent three hours extinguishing the flames and used two hose reels, a main water jet, a portable pump and a triple extension ladder in the process.A reinspection of the building took place this morning and the fire service has reported it to police as suspicious.Firefighters said believed a group of youths had been seen at the barn shortly before the fire started. It is the fifth suspicious fire in the town since last Saturday. On Wednesday night a disused caravan was destroyed on Newbury Racecourse, whiles Thames Valley Police is currently investigating a blaze on Monday night when six wooden sheds in Northway, off Queens Road, were damaged and a car fire in Speen on Sunday evening.A fire at an office in Northcroft Lane, which is thought to be one of the town's oldest buildings, on Saturday morning is also being treated as suspicious.
