Man assaulted in attempted robbery
Tue, November 17 2009

A man was struck around head with chain during attempted robbery in Greenham last week

A MAN was struck around the head and body several times in an attempted robbery in Newbury last Tuesday (November 10).
The incident happened at about 10.40pm in the alleyway between Courtlands Road and Greenham Road, when an 18-year-old man was approached by two youths as he was walking home.
The youths stopped the man and an altercation ensued, in which the victim was struck several times with a chain.
Nothing was taken in the incident, but police are now appealing for information and have released descriptions of the two youths involved, who were both white and about 16 or 17-years-old.
The first youth was 5ft 10ins, with short brown hair and was wearing a bulky material jacket with four large pockets, dark jeans and skater-style trainers.
The second youth was 5ft 8ins and stockier than the first. He had a shaved head with short blond hair and the victim believes he had a local accent.
Pc Brian Lock, who is investigating the incident, said: “Although nothing was taken, the victim has suffered a nasty attack and sustained injuries to his face and body. The chain used in the assault was slightly larger than that you would expect to find on a bicycle.
“I am keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the area at the time would may have seen these two youths, anyone who may have seen where they came from or even where they went.
“This type of behaviour will not be tolerated in Newbury and I would like to reassure the community that we are doing everything within our power to ensure the offenders are brought before the courts as soon as possible.”
Anyone with any information should contact Pc Lock on 0845 8 505 505, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, 0800 555 111.
