WEST Berkshire Museum is calling on district residents and businesses to help secure a locally significant painting for West Berkshire.Lord Jacob Astley, a professional soldier who was present in both Newbury battles, is the subject of a 1640 oil painting on sale at a London dealer for £16,000.He became commander of the Royalist Infantry in King Charles Council of War and is known to have played a key role in the second Battle of Newbury in 1644, earning his title in assisting the King and by leading his forces away from a Parliamentarian trap. The museum would like to acquire the painting for future generations, but only has until Christmas to raise the funds and is asking for donations from local people. If successful, the painting will be shown to the public for the first time at an exhibition at Shaw House from February next year.Various packages of benefits are available to those able to make donations from £10 to £2,000, which could include free event tickets, VIP tours, exhibition credits and more.To discuss the benefits or to find out more, contact heritage and tourism manager Amanda Loaring on 01635 519075.
