THE CHAMPAGNE corks were popping at a recent fundraising VIP bash in aid of a Newbury charity, in a new French-inspired restaurant in the town. Newbury mayor, Kuldip Singh Kang, attended the VIP reception at Brasserie Gerard (formerly Caffe Uno) in the Market Place, along with over 40 local dignitaries, to boost funds for the West Berkshire children’s charity Swings & SmilesThe event raised £160 for the charity.Swings & Smiles trustee, Sian Cook, said all the guests received a warm welcome and she was “thrilled” that charity would benefit from the £160 raised through the event. “It is such an honour to be chosen. We wish Brasserie Gérard every success,” said Mrs Cook. Restaurant manager, Josh Margarson, said the company was “delighted” to be supporting the charity, which, he added, does “fantastic work” for children with special needs in the community.Mr Margarson said: “The team and I were very happy to welcome the mayor and all our VIP guests from the town. It was a great evening of fine food and drink and fantastic company.” Swings & Smiles aims to raise £1m to fund a playground in the local area for children with special needs.
