NEWBURY Racecourse is to take on an extra race on Tuesday (December 29) following the abandonment of a recent meeting at Ascot. The Grade One Long Walk Hurdle was scheduled to take place at Ascot last week, but it has been rescheduled following the abandonment of Ascot Racecourse’s two-day Ladbroke meeting on Friday (December 18) and Saturday (19), which was lost to adverse weather. And Newbury has now stepped in to stage the event, adding the race to an existing card of seven races at the HEROS Charity and Family Day fixture, which includes the Grade One HEROS Challow Novices Hurdle. The Long Walk Hurdle, which is expected to include such runners as Diamond Harry, Big Bucks, Karaback and Katchit, will now be raced for a revised prize fund of £70,000. The joint managing director of Newbury Racecourse, Stephen Higgins, said: “We are very sorry Ascot lost such a valuable and high profile two days of racing. “With the Long Walk Hurdle playing a significant role in pointers for the Cheltenham Festival, Newbury Racecourse is delighted to step in and host the race and we are looking forward to welcoming everyone to what is set to be a quality day of jump racing.”
