The George Hotel, Pangbourne
Uncertainty over Pangbourne hotel
Tue, January 05 2010

Administrators of the company have handed The George Hotel back to the landlord

ADMINISTRATORS of The George Hotel, Pangbourne, have said they have handed the company back to the owners.
BDO, of Reading, took over the business in November last year however spokeswoman, Joy Frascinella, said it has now handed the business' premises back to the landlord who will now try and find a new tenant.
It is believed that 14 staff were employed by the hotel, which has 23 bedrooms and occupies a building which has been an inn since 1295.
It officially closed at the beginning of December and has not opened its doors since.
Residents have said they are unsure about what is happening with the building and Philip Cripps, who works in the family-run butcher, Greens of Pangbourne, has previously said the closure is bad for the village.
He said: “It’s such a shame for the village and this is the second business that we’ve lost - the Wine Rack went recently.
“People used to go to [The George Hotel] for lunch time and would see our shop while sitting looking out the window, so it was good for us.
“It’s a terrible shame and something like this will end up affecting the village.”
The Wine Rack, Reading Road, also closed a few months ago when its parent company, First Quench, went into administration.
The hotel was once the focal point of the village and the only permanent building at the junction of the river Pang and the Thames.
It regularly suffered from drainage problems and the cellars flooded in certain months.
In 1603 the cellars were filled in and there are rumours that former Pangbourne resident, Betty Price, who was accused of being a witch, was found hiding in there.
Newburytoday.co.uk has tried, on numerous occasions, to contact the owners of the hotel.
