Shaw House
Shaw House up for national award
Tue, January 26 2010

An historic Newbury landmark is in the running for an award for its restoration

SHAW House manor in Newbury has been shortlisted for a national award.
The Grade I listed building, which dates from 1581, was restored following a £6m project during 2005 to 2006 and is one of only three projects in the South East shortlisted to receive an award by the Civic Trust.
The awards are given to projects that are culturally, socially or economically beneficial, and make an outstanding contribution to the quality and appearance of the built environment.
Pamela Bale, West Berkshire executive councillor for leisure and culture (Con Pangbourne) said: “We are delighted that the restoration of Shaw House has been recognised nationally.
"It is clear to see the care and attention to detail that has gone into this successful restoration. It is very impressive and really allows visitors to connect with the history of West Berkshire.”
The awards ceremony will take place on March 12 at St George’s Hall in Liverpool where hosts will include the architect and television presenter , George Clarke, of Channel 4’s The Home Show, and Chris Wilkinson, the founder of Wilkinson Eyre Architects.
Shaw House was built by Newbury clothier Thomas Dolman. The Elizabethan building was home to successive Dolman families, the flamboyant Duke of Chandos and the Andrews and Farquhar families. Shaw House then began a new life as a school for generations of local children. However in 1985 Shaw House was evacuated due to concerns about the structure of the building.
Following the restoration, Shaw House is now a venue to hire for conferences, seminars and training events. From February half term until Christmas it is open to visitors at weekends and some days in school holidays. For more information visit www.shawhouse.org.uk
