David Rendel
Lib Dems predict a Labour and Conservative pact
Mon, February 08 2010

Liberal Democrat David Rendel has said that he predicts a Labour and Conservative pact after elections

THE Liberal Democrat prospective parliamentary candidate for Newbury is predicting a Labour and Conservative pact after the General Election.
David Rendel was speaking at the Spring conference of the South Central Liberal Democrats, of which he is the president, which was held at Park House School on Saturday.
He said he believes the forthcoming General Election will result in a balanced parliament, with no party winning an overall majority.
He said: “Of course we will be fighting to win an overall majority ourselves.
“But I have been saying since the day after the last General Election that the next parliament is almost certain to be balanced - the question which everyone will be asking is who will then form the government.”
Mr Rendel added the most likely coalition is a pact between the Labour and Conservative parties.
“They are much closer to each other in their policies than either of them is to us,” he said.
Mr Rendel cited the war in Iraq, the possibility of invading Iran and the deregulating of banks as some of the things the parties have agreed on, as well as them both opposing a proportional system of voting.
Other speakers at the Spring conference included the party’s national president, Baroness Scott of Needham Market, both south east MEPs, Sharon Bowles and Catherine Bearder, MPs Evan Harris and Sandra Gidley and the party’s director of campaigns, Hilary Stephenson.
