Invicta bookshop
Books flying of the shelves at Invicta
Thu, February 11 2010

Hundreds of customers have visited the Invicta bookshop since its closure was announced

BOOKS have been flying off the shelves at the Invicta bookshop in Newbury since it was recently announced to be closing.
According to one of it’s proprietors, hundreds of customers have walked through the doors of the independent book store which has existed for almost fifty years.
Brothers Simon and Tim Hall, who run the shop in Cromwell Place, off Northbrook Street, were told that it would have to close around the beginning of next month, as the building’s landlords, the United Reformed Church, plan to sell it for housing.
They have advertised a sale to clear their stock and Simon Hall said that customers he had not seen for years had come through the door in recent weeks.
“There have been quite a lot of old customers and a lot of new faces as well, so we’ve had quite a cross-section of people,” he said. “A lot of people are saying that they’re sorry to see us go.”
He said that it was heartening to see so many people and added that a lot of people were only just realising that the shop was there.
“If you’re well-established and people know you’ve always been there, people almost take us for granted,” he added.
The brothers will continue to run their business from Hungerford Arcade and the Chilton County Garden Centre near Didcot, after the shop’s closure.
