THE driver of a tractor had a narrow escape after 10 tonnes of straw he was hauling went up in flames last night (Tuesday). The tractor, which belongs to farmer Phillip Walters of Bower Farm, Aldworth, was pulling a 20ft trailer along Ambury Road with the bales of straw when the incident happened at about 6pm.Mr Walters said: "I don't know exactly what happened because I wasn't driving but the driver was very shaken up by the incident."It's definitely caused a lot of disruption for me."It is not known exactly how it caught alight but spokeswoman for Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue, Nicole Targett, said it was not uncommon. She said: "The bales get very hot inside and sometimes a fire can start on its own. This one was certainly not suspicious."About 12 firemen from Newbury rushed to the scene and took just under three hours to douse the flames.Ms Targett added: "They took so long to deal with it because the straw catches alight easily and what they were doing was dragging it out and spreading it so that it doesn't catch fire again."They went back at 7.30 this morning to check it."For more pictures of the fire, click on the link below.
