NEWBURY’S motorists are set to endure more traffic chaos as essential gas works are planned to start in May. One northbound lane of the A339 between Kings Road West and Carnegie Road will be closed for between two and four weeks to enable Southern Gas Networks (SGN) to replace the old cast iron gas mains with polyethylene piping. SGN spokeswoman, Morven Smith, said the work, which is due to start on Monday, May 3, is part of a replacement project laid down by the Health and Safety Executive and that this part of the project will cost about £72,000. West Berkshire Council spokeswoman, Peta Stoddart-Crompton, confirmed the work will start on May 3 and said advance warning signs will be erected. She added that further road closures may be necessary as SGN will make a connection at the end of Carnegie Road and continue down Cheap Street to Kings Road West, closing the connection loop. Meanwhile, council spokesman, Phil Spray, said current road works on Shaw Road are progressing well and said they should be completed, as expected, on Friday, March 19.
