A SURGE in votes for the Conservative party is painting the Royal County of Berkshire blue. With Richard Benyon increasing his majority to 12,248 in Newbury, together with wins in Bracknell, Windsor and Maidenhead, the county is awash with blue on political maps detailing the General Election results. And with Alok Sharma seizing control in Reading West, replacing the outgoing Labour stalwart Martin Salter, the county is turning more and more blue with every result. The Conservatives were also victorious in the Wokingham constituency as 58-year-old John Redwood, who has held the seat since 1987, retained it once more with 28,754 votes. He was far ahead of his Liberal Democrat rival Prue Bray, aged 52, who took just 28 per cent of the vote polling 15,262 votes. Labour party candidate George Davidson, aged 39, polled 5,516 votes, independent candidates Mark Ashwell and Robin Smith polled 2,340 and 96 votes, respectively. UKIP candidate Ann Zebedee, aged 67, obtained 1,664 votes and the Green Party’s Marjory Bisset took 567 votes. Peter ‘Top Cat’ Owen, aged 78, for the Official Monster Raving Loony Party walked away with 329 votes. Not all constituencies have been declared, however, with Reading East and Slough all still awaiting a declaration, as of 5.30am. Meanwhile, with the Conservatives currently holding the seat in Reading East and a small chance of a swing in Slough, it could yet be a clean sweep of the county for David Cameron's troops. |
