THOUSANDS of poultry farmers in the south east have joined a scheme to help deal with a bird flu outbreak.More than 20 million birds have been signed up to the DEFRA register as part of a programme to help reduce the impact of a possible epidemic.Poultry keepers with flocks of more than 50 birds must join the scheme by law, whereas those with fewer birds can volunteer their information.Nationally, 23,791 premises and 258,659,920 birds have been registered in the last 12 months.Set up in December 2005, the database will mean that DEFRA can contact poultry keepers quickly in the event of an outbreak, helping to target resources and contain the disease.DEFRA say the risk of avian influenza remains low, but poultry keepers are being urged to stay vigilant for signs of the disease. Those who still need to register flocks can do so by downloading forms from the Defra website or by calling freephone: 0800 634 1112.
