A POSTMORTEM will be carried out today (Friday) on the body of a man found in the canal at Great Bedwyn. The grim discovery was made by a member of the public yesterday (Thursday) morning.Wiltshire police spokeswoman Annie Walker said: “At the moment there is no appeal for witnesses. The post mortem will be carried out later today and that will decide if there were any suspicious circumstances or not.“Until the inquest is opened there will be no official identification.”The man was found in the Kennet and Avon canal 20 yards from the bridge at the Wharf and his body was removed by divers from Thames Valley Police at around 2pm.Locals said the man had lived alone in a boat on the canal in the area for the last few years.Landlord of the Cross Keys, Bruce Mason, said he first met the victim when he also lived in a boat on the canal in 1998.Mr Mason added: “He was a regular in the pub. He was a nice, pleasant enough chap.“He came in most lunchtimes and the evenings for a meal.“He came in on the Wednesday night and had a meal and a bottle of wine and then went back to his boat at about 7.30pm.“The next morning somebody came into the pub and told us the police were down at the Wharf.”
