Police
Yob crackdown in Theale
Tue, August 07 2007

Police renew dispersal order to stop big groups of young people intimidating local people and businesses

Police trying to stamp out anti-social behaviour in Theale have renewed a dispersal order covering the village centre, but are finding groups now meet further afield.
The order covers Church Street, High Street, Englefield Road, Crown Lane and Station Road, allowing officers to move on groups of yobs if their behaviour is unacceptable.
Officers can arrest anyone living in the area who doesn’t comply with their instructions, while outsiders can be banned from the neighbourhood until a set time.
Under-16s out on the streets after 9pm can be taken home, regardless of their behaviour.
Pc Matthew Allen said: “Residents and businesses in Theale were being intimidated on a daily basis by the large groups that gather in the area.
“The dispersal order has been successful, in that we are no longer getting as many reports of problems in and around the High Street area that we were before.
“We are now finding though that the groups are gathering further out. As a team we are targeting these areas to make sure these groups are not causing problems."
Many young people who meet up in Theale are from Calcot, Tilehurst or nearby villages.
Pc Allen said: “It is clear that some parents are not aware that their sons and daughters are involved in these groups. We are also finding that parents are dropping their children off in the village for the evening.
“I would urge parents, especially during the summer holidays, please know where your child is and what he or she is doing at all times.”
