BERKSHIRE County Cricket Club are poised to name former Hampshire and England spinner Shaun Udal as the club’s new professional for next season. The 38-year old Udal retired from County cricket at the end of the summer after a career that saw him take 724 first class wickets and 448 in the one-day games.Udal was a comparative latecomer to the England ranks, following an abortive stint in the 1994-5 Ashes tour, when a torn side muscle forced him to return home early from Australia. He had to wait until the 2005-6 tour of Pakistan and India, where he claimed eight test wickets with a best return of 4-14.Udal succeeds former Leicestershire and Essex batsman Aftab Habib as Berkshire’s professional, following Aftab’s appointment as coach to Hong Kong on a three-year contract.
