Gareth Malone with Willink School pupils
BBC2 star leads local masterclass
Thu, March 13 2008

Pupils from a local school joined in a singing masterclass led by BBC2's Gareth Malone

PUPILS of The Willink School, Burghfield Common, joined in a singing masterclass led by Gareth Malone of BBC2’s ‘The Choir: Boys Don’t Sing’ recently.
The choir maestro took the class in the Memorial Hall at Brockhurst and Marlston House Preparatory School, Newbury, after West Berkshire Council officers decided to introduce the new national accredited Arts Award to the secondary school’s choir members.
The masterclass launched the ‘singing inclusive’ initiative, whereby Willink choir members team up with a child with disabilities from West Berkshire schools, including The Castle School, Newbury, and Prior’s Court School, Thatcham.
They perform songs and actions learnt together that will culminate in a grand multi-media concert in October.
West Berkshire’s arts and leisure development officer Angela Turton said: “Gareth was totally on the wavelength of all the young people involved and introduced a range of singing and socialisation games, exercises and a three-part original composition.
“Students left the Memorial Hall buzzing with excitement following a top quality workshop and the keen anticipation of buddying special needs children in the forthcoming singing inclusion initiative.”
