ANIMAL rights protesters managed to gain access to Compton’s Institute of Animal Health last week – bypassing the site’s security measures. Three protesters from an unknown organisation gained access to the government research site last Monday (June 16) but were eventually rumbled by staff members and reported to the police. The government site contains large numbers of livestock to assist with its experiments into animal diseases. According to Thames Valley Police, two women and a man were told to leave by members of staff at 3.40pm after it was eventually discovered that they had somehow foiled security at the site. However, the trio stood their ground until the police were called but left shortly afterwards of their own accord. Institute spokesman, Professor David Cavanagh, confirmed that there had been an intrusion onto the site but denied that the intruders had entered any of the institute’s sensitive laboratory facilities. He said: “They were dealt with quickly and now the police are dealing with the matter."However, Thames Valley Police said it had no plans to investigate the matter further because the protesters eventually left of their own accord. Police spokesman, Adam Fisher, said that no criminal charges were brought.
