Baydon crash
Fresh fears over Baydon roads
Wed, July 30 2008

Car is spun across road towards school, just minutes before children walk home

FRESH concerns have been raised over road safety in Baydon after two cars collided outside St Nicholas Primary School in Ermin Street minutes before children left for home.
A black Range Rover coming into Baydon from the Lambourn direction collided with a parked car last Thursday, spinning it across the road towards the pavement outside the school’s pedestrian entrance.
The driver of the Range Rover was taken to hospital by ambulance with minor injuries, and a fire engine and two police cars also attended.
Parish councillor Tony Prior was one of the first people to arrive on the scene after the collision.
“The parked car had been bounced on to the other side of the road,” he said. “Luckily, it happened at 3pm, and all the children were still in school. They break up at 3.15pm, so it happened just before. The path would have been filled with children and parents picking them up if it had happened 15 minutes later.
“As a parish council, we have asked people what their concerns about the village are, and speeding traffic through Ermin Street was one of them.
He said that there was nothing to suggest the Range Rover had been speeding, but that the council would be looking at ways to improve road safety in the village anyway, as part of its parish plan.
“The councillors are all very concerned about it and we want to see some form of action,“ he said. “We are looking at all the signs available, like flashing signs telling people to slow down.
“We have flashing lights coming in and out of the village to tell people to go at 30mph, but we are trying to update ourselves on all the possibilities. ”
