Newbury's mayor and TV star Matt Bardock from Casualty will turn on the town's Christmas lights this evening. It is hoped that hundreds will pack into the Market Place at 5pm to watch the annual event. The ceremony will start with a parade through Northbrook Street led by town crier, Brian Sylvester, and Newbury Mayor Phil Barnett at 4.30pm. Children from Speenhamland Primary School will accompany the pair into the market place where they will meet Mr Bardock, who plays "Geoff" in the hospital soap opera. The ceremony will be followed by a fireworks display in Victoria Park at 5.45.The Park Way bridge will be closed between 4.30 and 7pm.
