TWO waste workers were injured when a bin lorry toppled onto its side and into a telegraph pole in Ashford Hill at 7am on Tuesday (December 9). The heavy lorry, which belongs to West Berkshire waste contractor Veolia, was travelling north east through Ashford Hill towards Brimpton Common when it left the road and fell down a grass verge and into a hedge - destroying a telegraph pole. The driver and a bin man were taken to the North Hampshire Hospital in Basingstoke where one received treatment for a head injury and the other man was treated for an injury to his arm. Both were released from hospital shortly after and are recovering, while Veolia blamed another motorist for the accident. Veolia spokesman, Martin Curtois said: “Our vehicle was overtaken by a car which failed to complete the manoeuvre properly and cut in, causing our vehicle to swerve to avoid a collision. “As a result, our vehicle entered the soft verge and travelled another 250 yards coming to a rest on its side but the load was not disturbed."The accident will not affect kerbside rubbish collection because it was only used to collect commercial waste, according to Veolia. Hampshire police spokesman, Tim Feltham said that police were investigating the incident but no arrests had been made.
