FIREFIGHTERS battled to plug a hole in a lorry’s diesel tank before thousands of litres of fuel spilled over the A34 last night (Thursday, March 27).Two fire engines from Newbury raced to the scene on the northbound carriageway, just north of Chieveley, at around 7pm last night after reports of a lorry leaking fuel.Crew manager Mike Wilson said it is thought the lorry, which was carrying a fork lift truck, had hit some debris on the busy road, which had punctured the diesel tank.Fire crews used a special paste to stop the leak.“It [the paste] is usually quite hard to use, but this time it luckily worked well,” added crew manager Wilson.Around 200 litres of the lorry’s 5,000 litre fuel load had leaked onto the carriageway before the firefighters managed to stem the flow. One lane of the dual-carriageway was closed while the clean up operation took place.Thames Valley Police and the Highways Agency spent some time at the scene clearing the remaining fuel off of the road surface. No one was injured in the incident and no other vehicles were involved.
