Thatcham Tornadoes annual tournament rolls over two days

THATCHAM Tornadoes’ annual six-a-side tournament attracted the largest entry to date with 226 teams from across the south taking part.

It was the 22nd organised by chairman Graham Bartlett, who said: “The pressure was on to maintain our high standards and everyone rose to the occasion to ensure this was the best tournament yet.”

Many of the under seven and eight teams had their first taste of tournament football, with the respective referees’ fair play awards going to Winklebury Wizards and Caversham Trent Red.

In the older age groups, Tornadoes teams reached two finals with the under 14 Amber narrowly beaten in the Consolation Cup by Northside Athletic while the under nine Stripes pushed Andover Town Youth Blue all the way and just missed out on the silverware after conceding a golden goal in extra time.

Other local successed came from Thatcham Town in the under 15 competition and Wickham Wanderers in the under 13 event, while West Berkshire Warriors Blue were under 12 Consolation Cup runners-up.

AFC Newbury saw five teams reach the finals with the under 10 Colts White and Red teams meeting each other with the former lifting the trophy, while AFC Newbury Red claimed silverware in the under 14 cup and AFC Newbury Blue the under 15 Consolation cup, AFC Newbury White also finshing as runners-up in the under 13 consolation contest.

The Thatcham Tornadoes SPX Charity Speedshot raised nearly £700 for Franconi Hope in memory of former Tornadoes supporter, manager and coach Stephen Waters with a fastest strrike of the week of 71 mph.

Tornadoes are now organising the club’s inaugural girls football tournament for under eight to 13 age groups at Douai Park on Sunday, June 5.

Under nine - Andover Town Youth White, runners-up Thatcham Tornadoes Stripes; Consolation competition - Goring Hurricanes, runners-up Andover Town Youth.

Under 10 - AFC Newbury Colts White, runners-up AFC Newbury Reds; Consolation competition - Down Grange, runners-up Andover Town Youth Blue.

Under 11 - Winklebury Wizards Blue, runners-up Andover Town Youth; Consolation competition - Burghfield CSA Falcons, runners-up Overton Youth Whites.

Under 12 - Finchampstead, runners-up FC Salisbury; Consolation competition - Chineham Tigers, runners-up West Berkshire Warriors Blue.

Under 13 - Wickham Wanderers, runners-up MFC Popley; Consolation competition - Winklebury Wizards, runners-up AFC Newbury Whites.

Under 14 - AFC Newbury Red, runners-up Loddon Sports; Consolation competition - Northside Athletic, runners-up Thatcham Tornadoes Amber.

Under 15 - Thatcham Town, runners-up Southcote Colts; Consolation competition - AFC Newbury Boys Blue, runners-up Calcot Royals White.

Under 16 Stephen Waters Memorial Trophy - Crusaders, runners-up Woodley United; Consolation competition - Tadley Calleva Yellow, runners-up Woodley United Blue.
