BURGHCLERE Primary School clinched victory in a nail-biting netball tournament at a Newbury school.

Pupils from various local schools took part in the tournament at Park House School.

Burghclere began with a 2-1 victory over St Martin’s Primary, in East End, then took on Streatley Primary, their toughest match ending in a 2-2 draw.

And they finished off their group games with wins over Shaw-cum-Donnington Primary (3-1) and Brightwalton Primary (2-0).

With a total of three wins and a draw, Burghclere were in the semi-finals, where they faced St Finian’s.

An excellent game finished goalless after the allotted time, but Burghclere scored the all-important winner in extra time.

School spokeswoman Val Garnett said: “It was a fantastic effort by all and a very close and tense match.

“The children were elated and the coaches’ nerves in tatters as we entered the final against Chieveley.”

But Burghclere stepped up to the plate again to score a 3-1 win and clinch the tournament.
