A 22-year old male has died and another is in hospital following a collision on the A339 which has closed the road in both directions.

The accident between a Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Antara happened near to Kingsclere at around 7.16 am this morning (Sunday).

Michelle Archer from South Central Ambulance Service which was called to the accident shortly before quarter past seven said a hazardous area response team was sent, as was a rapid response team and one ambulance crew and one doctor.

She said: "Sadly one patient was confirmed dead at the scene and a second patient - a male aged 56 - was treated for chest and leg injuries.

"Following the assessment at the scene he was taken to North Hampshire hospital in Basingstoke for treatment to these potentially serious injuries."

Hampshire Constabulary are appealing for witnesses and said: "Officers are particularly keen to talk to the owner of a silver vehicle possibly parked in a layby on the A339 seen flashing its headlights to oncoming traffic after the accident as we believe they may be able to help us with our investigation into the circumstances of the accident."

The road was closed for several hours for police investigation work but has since re-opened.

Hampshire Constabulary are asking witnesses to contact Sergeant Martin Munday from Whitchurch Roads Policing Unit on 101 quoting Operation GLATTON or to contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
