WARNINGS of an apparent tree surgeon scammer pretending to be from a well-known local business and leaving properties in a mess have been issued across Newbury and Thatcham.

Tree surgeon business GA Butler and Sons said that it had received four separate phone calls in the last few weeks from “customers” who had called to ask if the genuine business could clear away mess that had been left behind, despite
no work having been carried out by the Newbury company.

Partner Luke Butler said that customers were being tricked by at least one man, possibly two, driving a red transit van and saying they were from GA Butler.

He said: “We have had a few people ring up over the last few weeks saying that people are doing tree surgeon work and saying that they are Butler’s. But they aren’t.

“These people have been ringing us up and expecting to tidy up the mess that these cowboys have been leaving.”

“These people have been impersonating us and pretending to be our company.

“They are nothing to do with us. We don’t do door knocking and our fleet is all white vans, not red.”

He said that he had raised his concerns with the police.
