A Thatcham van fire during the early hours of this morning (Wed) was a suspected arson.

One pump from Newbury Fire Station was called at 2am to a car park off Redshank Court, near Lower Way, where an unoccupied van was discovered well alight.

A neighbouring block of flats was evacuated and the road closed during the incident.

No-one was hurt.

One firefighter wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the blaze using a hosereel.

A Honda Jazz situated approximately two metres away from the van was also damaged, after the flames melted light fittings and door handles.

Firefighters left the scene about one hour later.

Police were also at the scene.
