Newbury shoppers in lucky escape

SHOPPERS in Newbury had a lucky escape this morning (Tuesday) after narrowly avoiding being hit by falling bricks.

The bricks came loose from the roof of the building occupied by Adecco in Northbrook Street before plummeting towards the ground 20ft below.

Fortunately, the porch below prevented the majority of the bricks from hitting the ground, however one did fall onto the busy street.

John Armstrong, who was called to help repair the roof, said: “It was lucky it (the porch) was there otherwise it could have been far more serious and someone could have got badly hurt.

“We are just waiting for the scaffolder to arrive so they can secure it before we carry out the works.”

West Berkshire Council put barriers around the area and police later placed an official cordon around it.
