Just days after the district basked in blistering sunshine, the Met Office this morning [Friday] has issued a severe weather warning for heavy showers and thunderstorms.

The yellow warning is in effect from 11am this morning to 10pm tonight, as showers are expected to occur through the late morning and early afternoon, before slowly fading this evening.

The Met Office said: “The heaviest showers are likely during the afternoon and early evening, so are likely to coincide with the rush hour. “

Due to slow winds, it has been warned that showers may be prolonged, allowing 20-25mm of rain to fall in a short period of time, in a small area.

Forecasters also warned of the potential for travel disruption.
