“Sex clinics” manned by a giant inflatable elephant called Ellie are coming to Newbury as West Berkshire Council looks at raising awareness about sex health.

The new initiative from the council will be held today [Friday] with information stalls and a new condom distribution centre set up at Northbrook Street.

The event, held between 12 and 4pm on Friday has been organised by West Berkshire Council’s Integrated Youth Support Service and Public Health and Wellbeing team.

The stalls at Northbrook Street will provide advice and information about different services, contraceptives and checks and Youth Health Champions will be on hand to offer advice.

Executive member for health and wellbeing Graham Jones said: “This is a worthy initiative as we have amongst some of the best services in this field for young people.

“It is important that we raise awareness and highlight new services that can be accessed through different and often discreet channels including the internet and apps.”

Head of public health and wellbeing at West Berkshire Council Lesley Wyman said: “It is important we help young people make the right choices about their sexual health and wellbeing, to highlight the support that is available.

“We are really keen that young people are familiar with the range of sexual health provision we offer in the district.

“Now that we are in the middle of the summer holidays we hope that there will be lots of young people out and about and happy to spend a few minutes finding out about how they can keep stay safe, happy and healthy.”
