Delays for motorists after A339 lane closures

FURTHER lane closures on the A339 look likely to cause more misery for Newbury motorists today (Wednesday) following on from the severe delays experienced by drivers yesterday.

Newbury's road network went into meltdown during Tuesday lunchtime owing to the single lane closure on the northbound carriageway between Sainsbury's and the Robin Hood roundabout.

Motorists travelling north were stuck in tailbacks as far as the Sandelford link (pictured above), while roads through the town centre also became gridlocked.

However West Berkshire Council plan to close a second lane on the northbound carriageway for the next week with traffic moved onto the other side of the road in a contra-flow arrangement, meaning one of the major routes through Newbury will be reduced to a single lane in both directions.

The closures are expected to be in place between 9.30am and 3.30pm until October 5.

The closure will allow the council to carry out resurfacing work on the busy dual carriageway as part of the ongoing widening of the A339.

The roadworks, which started in February will also see the installation of a new junction leading from the A339 into the London Road Industrial Estate.

Close the road or restrict its width 9pm to 6am NOT in the day time. Once again road users suffer severe delays which could be minimised by doing night work, as on motorways.

I walk through the racecourse every day, and those bollards aren't working, cars can drive straight through and use the new bridge. Take advantage of the racecourse paying for crappy equipment they can't get right and save driving time!

Bet it pisses off the truckers that use the A339 as a shortcut instead of using the A34 !

Don't really understand the anger. It can't be done at night because of the noise. Find an alternative route or other form of transport for these few days. It'll be great when finished - the pedestrian crossing into Victoria Park and the new pathway in the park will be particularly good. Looking forward to seeing it complete!

Find an alternative route? Since the closure of the Park Way Crossing to the public, there is no real alternative route across Newbury. There are just 2 optional routes to get from the Robin Hood r/about to Sainsburys: Via A4 and Hambridge Road, (2.5 miles) which also has major traffic issues or the Newbury bypass which is 8.7 miles. During this period they should re-open the Park Way crossing to cars and/or switch off the R/Hood and Sainsbury's R/about traffic lights. The whole system works better without the lights anyway!
