Allotment awards winners announced

DEDICATED allotmenteers have been recognised at the Newbury Town Council 2016 Allotment Awards.

Following visits to Newbury’s six allotment sites by councillors earlier in the year, Newbury Town Council presented awards to tenants who were judged to have kept the best allotment plots on each site, at a meeting on Monday.

Twenty awards were given, including Best Newcomer, Best Plots, Best Schools Plot and Best Site Overall. Framed certificates were handed out to each of the winners at the meeting.

A trophy was presented to Dave Cole, the steward of the One Tree Park allotment site – which won the coveted Best Site Overall prize. Mr Cole, who collected the silver trophy, has had his allotment at site off Fifth Road since 1984.

The 65-year-old said: “My house backs onto the allotments so I haven’t got too far to go.

“It is the first time One Tree Park has won the award so it is very pleasing.

“It’s a lovely place and I enjoy spending my weekends there.”
