Streatley lorry smash aftermath

THIS is the aftermath caused by a lorry smashing into two buildings in Streatley this morning (Wednesday).

The B4009 was closed at the Streatley crossroads after the lorry became wedged between The Bull Inn pub and an adjacent property.

The A329 in both directions was also closed, while the vehicle was removed and the building damage assessed.

Most of the chimney has been destroyed and bricks were lying in the road.

Susan Carter, a Streatley resident, arrived at the scene shortly after the incident had taken place.

She said: “It seems that a wedge has been taken out of the pub and the property next to it, the chimney from the roofline down has been taken out.

“We don’t know what damage there will be until the vehicle is removed.

“It is a narrow road which isn’t designed for large lorries. Just the other week the black bollards which are there to offer some protection were taken out.

“It’s just fortunate a human being wasn’t there at the time.

“The lady who lives in the property that has been damaged has been writing to both Streatley Parish Council and West Berkshire Council for years to express her concerns but nothing has been done.”

Maria Watsham, who lives next door to the property that has been damaged, added: “Something has to be done before someone is killed. It is so dangerous.”

Gail Shuttleworth, who lives opposite The Bull pub, said: “We are waiting here for a chimney to collapse. It is very worrying and disconcerting.

“The Bull is a listed building, as are the other properties here. We just want to protect what we have.

“Four years ago a car came into the front of my house. It’s getting ridiculous.”

Police and fire crews were also in attendance.
