A MOTORIST was taken to hospital following an accident on the main A4 road in Newbury last night (Friday).

The incident happened near the BP garage around 9pm and involved a black Volkswagen Golf which struck a lamppost, sustaining serious damage.

Police, fire and ambulance crews attended and the incident caused traffic tailbacks.

Newbury Fire Station's Red Watch manager, Bob Mitchell, attended with his crew.

He revealed the incident was a single vehicle accident in which a male was trapped.

Firefighters used hydraulic cutting equipment to free the trapped male, who was taken to hospital by ambulance.
