Beedon wants to know who owns village monument

Can you help solve war memorial mystery?

WHO owns this war memorial?

Beedon Parish Council is hoping that Newbury Weekly News readers can uncover the mystery.

The war memorial, situated in St Nicholas’ churchyard, lists the names of 20 men from Beedon and World’s End who died in the First World War.

The parish council is trying to discover who has responsibility for the monument as grants for its restoration can then be applied for.

The appeal follows the parish council being approached by a representative of the church regarding ownership of the memorial and, on investigation, discovering that it had no record of who owned it.

The memorial does not appear on the parish council’s assets register and further investigations have only said that the ownership is unknown.

The parish council is asking residents and people with connections to the village to get in touch by contacting the parish clerk, Janet Haines, at clerk@beedonparishcouncil.org

Many war memorials were erected in the early 1920s and paid for by public subscription after the First World War.
