Firefighters called to blazing vehicle in Old Burghclere

POLICE are investigating after a car is believed to have been deliberately set on fire on a driveway in Pangbourne in the early hours of Sunday morning (December 18).

The incident could have ended in tragedy had the occupants of the property in Bourne Road not noticed the blaze quickly and evacuated via the back door.

Crews from Dee Road and Caversham arrived at the scene at around 1.30am and extinguished the inferno.

The car, a BMW saloon, was completely destroyed by the fire.

However watchmanager at Dee Road fire station, Mark Jones, said the incident could have been far worse.

"They were lucky," he said.

"The fuel tank had spilled down the road so it was a running fire.

"It easily could've trapped the occupants inside the property and the police are taking this very seriously as an endangerment to life."
