CANOEING: The final warm-up to this year’s Devizes to
Westminster Easter marathon saw paddlers make the longest trip of the annual Waterside Series when tackling the canal and river from Devizes to Newbury on Sunday.

The 34 miles and 35 portages around locks and obstacles saw Fowey’s Ryan Pearce and Michael Southey finish second on the day but head the overall placings in the K2 senior class. They were runners-up in last year’s series and went on to win the main Devizes-Westminster event.

They finished more than six minutes behind the day’s leading pair, Brett Irvine and Tom Sharpe from Richmond, who clocked 40 hours 4 minutes 15 seconds.

Another Fowey teaming of Daniel Palmer and Connor Peters won the junior K2 race and led the way overall, while the leading solo on the day was paddler was Leighton Buzzard’s Samuel Plummer in 4:46.30 with Norwich’s Ashley Nobbs claiming the junior prize.

The overall series winners were as follows:

K2 senior: Ryan Pearce and Michael Southey (Fowey) 12:05.10.

K2 junior: Daniel Palmer and Connor Peters (Fowey) 11:55.19.

K2 ladies: Caroline Banson and Julie Hicks (Norwich) 15:50.35.

K2 junior ladies: Helen Frawley and Holly Mobbs (Lord Wandsworth College) 17:38.13.

K2 veteran: Rob Stainsby and Mike Webb (Richmond) 12:47.39.

K2 mixed: Alex Lane and Radek Zielinski (Reading) 12:20.41.

Junior/veteran: Tracy Rees-Clark and Harry Veness (Basingstoke) 15:43.02.

K1 senior: Samuel Plummer (Leighton Buzzard) 11:37.27.

K1 junior: Ashley Nobbs (Norwich) 13:12.36.

K1 ladies: Bethany Goodlad (Leighton Buzzard) 17:20.43.

K1 veteran: Daniel Seaford (Reading) 12:34.58.

Canadian doubles: Daniel Finlayson and Thor Harley (Richmond) 15:11.54.

Canadian singles: 1 Marcin Ponomarenkow (Richmond) 14:43.21.
