Thatcham lose top spot after Purley setback

THATCHAM were dragged off the top of Division One of the Morrant Thames Valley League when Purley handed them a 38-run defeat alongside the Thames.

With Royal Ascot scoring a comfortable maximum points win over bottom of the table Fleet, Thatcham now trail their rivals by 17 points with Aldershot breathing down their own necks.

Thatcham’s inability to chase down a target again let them down as they reached 76-0 in reply to Purley’s 208 but slipped to 135-4 and then 154-9 before they were all out for 170, Paul Reber’s unbeaten 101 having guided Purley to their total.

Falkland II retain an outside chance of snatching a top two spot after their eight wicket win over Finchampstead III while Newbury’s lean spell continued with a six-wicket defeat at the hands of Wokingham II.

Falkland’s senior side moved back into the top four in Division One with a six wicket win over Yateley as Bruce Martin took 6-70 and Hamza Riazuddin 4-59 to dismiss the home side for 158 before Martin’s 57 and an unbeaten 51 from Mark Abrams took Falkland home with wickets and overs to spare.
