Newbury holds race in racing legend's honour

NEWBURY Racecourse will host the official Sir Peter O'Sullevan memorial race on Hennessy Gold Cup Day on November 28.

The race will slot into the Saturday programme at the bet365 Festival and the Sir Peter O'Sullevan Memorial Handicap Chase will be worth £40,000 and run over two miles six and a half furlongs as the third race on the card.

Channel 4 Racing has brought forward the start of its broadcast to enable the race to be shown live.

The final commentary of Sir Peter's illustrious career for the 1997 Hennessy Gold Cup, which was won by Suny Bay as he called home his 40th of the then 41 runnings of the race.

On the same day his own Sounds Fyne won the next race on the card at Newbury.

Mike Dillon, one of Sir Peter's closest friends, said: "This is the perfect venue as Newbury was very close to Peter's heart.

“We would like to thank Newbury and the sponsors for agreeing to stage this race and in particular Channel 4 for coming on air earlier to ensure the race receives the live coverage it deserves.”
