NEWBURY and Crookham’s David Niven helped England’s senior men into the bronze medal position on the final day of the European Team Championships at the Diners Club in Slovenia.

England beat Italy 3-2 to improve upon last year’s fifth place with Niven powering to his is first singles win of the week by defeating Federico Lang 6 and 4 before Stoneham’s Alan Mew sealed the win by holing a chip on the 15th to record a 4 and 3 win over Marco De Rossi.

England had qualified in third place following the matchplay stages, going on to defeat Spain

The men qualified in third place for the matchplay stages of the championship and defeated Spain 3-2 in the quarter finals. But their hopes of winning the gold medal were dashed when they lost 3½-1½ to eventual champions Scotland in the semi-finals, the Scots going on to beat Germany by the same score in the final.
