England beat Italy 3-2 to improve upon last year’s fifth place with Niven powering to his is first singles win of the week by defeating Federico Lang 6 and 4 before Stoneham’s Alan Mew sealed the win by holing a chip on the 15th to record a 4 and 3 win over Marco De Rossi.

The men qualified in third place for the matchplay stages of the championship and defeated Spain 3-2 in the quarter finals. But their hopes of winning the gold medal were dashed when they lost 3½-1½ to eventual champions Scotland in the semi-finals, the Scots going on to beat Germany by the same score in the final.
